Author Jim Simpson reveals one of the most extreme and overlooked figures in the history of communist revolution. He explains how Sergey Nechayev, the man behind the Revolutionary Catechism, created the blueprint for violent upheaval long before Lenin or Gramsci.
Simpson describes how Nechayev outlined a step-by-step purge of society, beginning with people of faith and conviction, moving on to the agitators used to create chaos, and ending with anyone who questioned the new regime. The Soviet Union followed his model almost exactly.
He also explains how Dostoevsky based the villain in his novel Demons on Nechayev and why the slogan “the ends justify the means” traces back to him.
