RENTING HER WOMB, THEN PAYING HER TO LEAVE
Seth Gruber, CEO of White Rose Resistance, argues that commercial surrogacy turns pregnancy into a transaction and children into products, with economically vulnerable women, particularly women of color, often carrying the greatest burden.
He says the surrogate is paid not only to carry and deliver the child, but ultimately to leave the child’s life. Pointing to a viral video of a young child repeatedly asking for “Mama” while being told there is no mother, Gruber questions what is lost when adult desires are placed above a child’s natural bond with the woman who carried and gave birth to them.
