Fifth generation Texas cattle rancher Shad Sullivan joins Lara Logan to explain Mandatory Country of Origin Labeling (MCOOL) and why he believes American consumers should know whether the beef they are buying came from the United States or was imported from countries such as Mexico, Brazil or Argentina.

Shad explains how imported beef enters the United States with documentation identifying its country of origin, but changes made in 2015 ended federal mandatory country-of-origin labeling requirements for beef and pork at retail.

Ranchers are not getting richer, and consumers are not paying less. According to fifth generation Texas cattle rancher Shad Sullivan, the powerful corporations controlling the middle of America’s beef supply chain are the ones benefiting.

Shad tells Lara Logan that President Trump has ordered an investigation into the nation’s largest meatpackers and that the investigation is now extending to major retailers.

In Episode 97 of Going Rogue with Lara Logan, Shad explains how four major meatpackers came to control approximately 85% of the beef-processing market while ranchers were forced off their land and consumers faced rising prices.

Lara and Shad also examine foreign beef imports, the elimination of mandatory country-of-origin labeling, the decline of the American cattle herd, threats to private property rights and what the loss of independent ranchers could mean for America’s food security and sovereignty.
