RELEASE THEM, DON’T WAREHOUSE THEM
On Episode 71 of Going Rogue with Lara Logan, Bureau of Prisons Director William Marshall explains what he believes the real measure of success should be inside America’s federal prison system.
Marshall tells Lara that reform is not just about budgets, staffing levels, or how many people are incarcerated. Instead, he says the Bureau of Prisons should be judged by how many people leave prison prepared to rebuild their lives and never return.
According to Marshall, that means ensuring inmates have access to proper education, vocational training, healthcare, nutrition, and constructive activities while they are in custody. He argues that treating people with dignity and respect costs nothing, but can make a meaningful difference in whether someone successfully reintegrates into society.
Marshall says the true success of the prison system should be measured by how many people are released back into society with the tools they need to rebuild their lives.
