HOW THE MEDIA CREATES POLARIZATION
On our newest episode of Going Rogue with Lara Logan, Lara is joined by Mike Smith, former Hollywood stuntman and action director, and the filmmaker behind the documentaries “Out Of Shadows” and “Into The Light.”
During the conversation, Smith revisits a clip from “Out Of Shadows” featuring Boone Cutler, U.S. Army veteran and information warfare commentator.
In the clip, Cutler explains how polarization can become a manufactured sense of life and death. When issues are framed emotionally instead of rationally, critical thinking can shut down. Fear replaces logic. Once someone believes a situation threatens their survival, their family, or their country, they instinctively defend that belief, even when confronted with evidence.
Using the analogy of a child afraid of a monster in the closet, Cutler argues that if you convince people there is a “boogeyman,” emotion overrides reason.
The discussion centers on media narratives, perception, and how polarization shapes public debate.
