Simpson describes how Nechayev outlined a step-by-step purge of society, beginning with people of faith and conviction, moving on to the agitators used to create chaos, and ending with anyone who questioned the new regime. The Soviet Union followed his model almost exactly.
He also explains how Dostoevsky based the villain in his novel Demons on Nechayev and why the slogan “the ends justify the means” traces back to him.
